We're All GMOs: How the Microenvironmental Context Affects the Mutational Landscape

In each and everyone of us (yes, you too), there are billions of cells with somatic mutations. Even starker, billions of these mutations are associated with cancer and other diseases. However, most of us will not have clinically-confirmed cancer or mutation-driven disease at least until we are in our 60s. Why? How is this possible and what does this tell us about mutations that we associate with disease? In this seminar, I will discuss two projects with the aim of addressing these questions: analyzing mutations in disease-free lung to assess cancer risk and characterizing blood mutations in people with Down syndrome to understand why they have an increased risk to hematologic malignancies.

Everyone is welcome to the seminar. For more information please contact Dr. Greg Ragland.
