Dr. Diana Tomback's Work for the Conservation of the Whitebark Pine

Published: Feb. 17, 2023

Dr. Diana Tomback has been a tireless champion for the conservation of the whitebark pine, working through the non-Profit Organization, Whitebark Pine Ecosystem Foundation that she and colleagues founded in 2001. In December 2022, her efforts were rewarded when the tree was provided protection as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service.  Dr. Tomback’s work continues to be a source sought after for articles by many publications; in February, the Bozman Chronicle featured her work in their article, “Scientists, land managers work to restore whitebark pine nationwide”.  Dr. Tomback will also be a panelist at a major whitebark pine event hosted in Washington, DC, March 11 at the National Press Club.

A major campaign, “Save the Whitebark Pine”, https://www.americanforests.org/save-the-whitebark-pine/ organized by American Forests presents a collaboration among American Forests, the Whitebark Pine Ecosystem Foundation, Ricketts Conservation Foundation, and Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology.

There is a great video associated with the campaign including footage shot by Cornell Lab of Ornithology. The campaign got an Instagram shout-out from Leonardo DiCaprio this past weekend.
