Notice of Upcoming Street Closure: Larimer Street from Speer Boulevard to 14th Street

Published: Dec. 9, 2022

Plan for more travel time during finals week, Commencement and into 2023

The City of Denver will be closing Larimer Street from 14th to Speer Boulevard starting Monday, Dec. 12, for a construction project which will enhance the safety, beauty, and mobility of Larimer Street.

The project will enhance access and create even greater connectivity from our campus to downtown. The 60-year-old Larimer Street Bridge that connects the Auraria Campus over Cherry Creek and into Larimer Square will be replaced. Once complete the street will include 12-foot-wide sidewalks, a two-way protected bikeway, pedestrian lighting, seating, and trees.

Students, faculty, and staff who utilize Larimer Street to commute between Downtown Denver and the Auraria Campus will need to plan for extra commuting time. Pedestrians can cross Speer Boulevard at Lawrence Street instead of Larimer. One lane of northbound Speer Boulevard (downtown side) will be closed, but access to the parking lot on the corner of Larimer and 14th will remain open.

The Cherry Creek Trail also will be closed around the project site and detours will be posted. During peak travel hours, all lanes on Speer Boulevard in the project zone will be open to motorists. During non-peak hours, motorists can expect one-lane closures. In general, all motorists at all hours are advised to allow for extra travel time while this project is underway.

The project is expected to be completed in Fall 2023.
