Understanding interactions between biotic disturbances in forest ecosystems
Coincident with recent warm and dry conditions, forests around the world have experienced increases in biotic disturbances caused by insects and plant pathogens. While considerable research has examined the caused and consequences of individual biotic disturbances, far less is understood about spatiotemporal interactions among multiple biotic disturbances. Here I will discuss the causes and consequences of ‘hotspots’ of biotic disturbances – areas where two or more distinct biotic disturbances overlap in space and time. Drawing from examples from Colorado, here I will discuss a framework for understanding interactions between biotic disturbances. Finally, I will conclude by discussing the implications for managing forests in the context of multiple biotic disturbances.
Everyone is welcome to join the seminar, please email jacki.craig@ucdenver.edu to receive the Zoom link. Requests can be submitted any time before the seminar but not after 10:00am the day of the seminar.
