Research at CU Denver or Elsewhere for Course Credit

Published: June 13, 2022

Students can earn course credits through research either on- or off-campus. Course credit can be combined with financial compensation, meaning you can get credits while also being paid to conduct research. See below for financial support options.

For on campus course credit, students can enroll in Independent Study (BIOL 2840, 3840 or 4840) and/or Directed Research (BIOL 4880) and work directly with a faculty member. Undergraduates must have a minimum of 2.5 cumulative GPA and may obtain up to 6 credit hours of Independent Study and/or Directed Research, over 2-3 semesters. These credits can be applied as electives in the biology major. Research requests must be submitted through a special processing form signed by the faculty member you will be working with.

To find a faculty member to work with, either contact them directly asking for research opportunities in their group or consult the Job PostingsPLEASE NOTE: Senior Instructors do not have labs and do not take students for Independent Study or Directed Research. Contact Assistant Professors, Associate Professors, or Professors instead (you can find the faculty list here).

For off-campus course credit, students can enroll in Internship (BIOL 3939) which provides opportunities to obtain hands-on experience and link coursework studies with the world of work. Internships can be conducted at research institutions in the community (such as the CU Anschutz campus) or out of state/abroad. You can find all information regarding Internships here.
