2022 Spring Call for Nominations, Integrative Biology Student Excellence Awards

Published: March 18, 2022

The Integrative Biology (IB) Awards, Scholarship and Outreach (ASO) Committee is soliciting self-nominations and faculty/staff nominations for students that have excelled in their programs. We recognize students in the following categories:
 • Integrative Biology Graduate Student Excellence in Research Award ($250 from Smilodon)
 • Integrative Biology Graduate Student Excellence in Teaching Award ($250 from Smilodon)
 • Integrative Biology Undergraduate Student Excellence in Research Award ($250 from Smilodon)

 • Integrative Biology Undergraduate Student Excellence in Teaching Award ($250 from Smilodon)

Research can include scholarly activities that make an original, intellectual, or creative contribution to the biology discipline (including the scholarship of biology teaching and learning). Teaching can include any formal teaching-related activities (e.g., teaching assistants, learning assistants, tutors, supplemental instructors, etc.). Evaluation criteria will be based on engagement, growth, independence, and knowledge (see evaluation rubrics below).

To be eligible for these awards, a student must be currently enrolled with an established GPA at the University of Colorado Denver. Undergraduate students must have a declared major in biology and graduate students must be enrolled in an Integrative Biology graduate program. Students at any level in their degree program are eligible to apply. Students that graduated in Summer/Fall 2021 are eligible for the Spring 2022 awards.

Stage 1: Self/faculty/staff nominations for IB student excellence awards must be submitted electronically by April 10, 2022 via Qualtrics: https://ucdenver.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_0DKXcqfMGvrSrJA

(A) Self-nomination: IB students that are interested in being considered for these awards should submit a self-nomination (via Qualtrics). These self-nominations require a resume/CV; a short statement describing your research and/or teaching efforts (focusing on the award(s) that you are being considered for); and contact information for a faculty/staff reference. After submitting your nomination, your faculty/staff reference will be contacted to gather additional supporting information for your application.

(B) Faculty/staff nomination: IB faculty/staff can nominate students by completing a short online evaluation (via Qualtrics) describing the students’ strengths and areas of growth related to their research and/or teaching efforts (focusing on the award(s) that they are being nominated for). After submitting your nomination, the student will be contacted to gather additional supporting information for their application (resume/CV and short research/teaching statement).

Stage 2: The ASO Committee will review all self/faculty/staff nominations and select the final departmental awardees. Final awardees will be notified by email. Student Excellence awardees will receive a certificate and their names will be engraved on the IB awards plaque located in the fourth-floor atrium of the Science Building. Awardees will receive $250 prize from a generous donor through the Smilodon Outstanding Scholar Endowment.

Note: Multiple awards may be given within one category depending on the nominations received (for a total of four awards). Students nominated for the CLAS Outstanding MS/PhD Student Awards will automatically be considered for the Integrative Biology Student Excellence Awards.
