Brian Buma's explorations and research in southern Cape Horn were featured in National Geographic Magazine (June 2021 issue) with a full article, highlighting the finding and documentation of the world's southernmost forest and southernmost trees. These forests grow on the inhospitable island of Isla Hornos, one of the top 10 windiest places in the world and surrounded by the dangerous Drake Passage, between South America and Antarctica.  Online subscribers can access the article here.

Dr. Buma was also awarded  one year grants from Boulder County, Jefferson County, and City of Boulder to look at management actions to reduce carbon emissions from wildfires.  The grants would also support a CU Denver Masters Student.
