Dr. Michael Wunder and Scott Yanco, PhD candidate in the Wunder lab, recently co-authored a publication in the journal Ecology and Evolution entitled “Evidence of post-breeding prospecting in a long-distance migrant”. This work showed evidence of prospecting (wherein birds search for and evaluate the quality of habitat) during the fall, before departing on migration. The constraints on prospecting behavior remain poorly understood, especially in migrants, because tracking prospecting individuals is technologically challenging. This paper took a novel approach by combining stable isotope analyses with mark-recapture data to show that many birds use the time between the end of the breeding season and the start of migration to search for habitats they may occupy the following spring. This work was a collaboration between several authors, including Max Ciaglo, Ross Calhoun, Brian Linkhart (Colorado College), and Craig Stricker (USGS
