Ecological and biogeochemical responses to climate change, land management, and herbivory
Future climate change will be determined in large part by how ecosystems globally respond to climate changes already underway. Whether different landscapes will contribute to slowing or accelerating future climate change will likely be determined by ecosystem response to climate and human activities at the local scale. This talk will focus on investigating these climate feedbacks in two regions of North America experiencing particularly rapid climate warming: southwest Colorado and sub-arctic Alaska. In southwest Colorado, emissions from forest systems are determined by interactions of human land-management decision making, and the effects of topography on local environmental conditions. In sub-arctic Alaska, previously unexplored teleconnections formed by migratory herbivores may create a negative feedback in the climate system by reducing the emission of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere. Understanding the effects of such interactions is critical for planning climate adaptation and mitigation strategies.
