The HHMI Inclusive Excellence initiative challenges U.S. colleges and universities to substantially and sustainably increase campus inclusion of all students, especially those students who belong to groups underrepresented in science. The grant has charged the University of Colorado Denver with the aim of creating a learning community of college and university faculty and administrators who are engaged in the continuing process of increasing their institution’s capacity for inclusion of all students.
CU Denver has joined a broader community of universities and colleges that have been engaged in the work of building inclusion and equity for all students in STEM. As a part of the learning community, CU Denver will exchange strategies, experiences, and approaches for ongoing assessment, evaluation, and resource development with other institutions participating in the HHMI Inclusive Excellence project.

HHMI Initiatives on the CU Denver campus
General Biology Curriculum Reform
The Department of Integrative Biology at CU Denver has played a leadership role in the effort to reform introductory STEM courses by re-envisioning the way science is taught through integrating inclusive teaching and course practices. The work done by Biology will provide a reference for future inclusive course reform efforts in CLAS.
Inclusive Excellence in STEM Alliance
The Inclusive Excellence in STEM Alliance is a group of facuty staff and administrators who meet quaterly to discuss methods to accomplish ongoing and systemic improvement in our institutional culture and capacity for diversity, respect, and inclusiveness on campus.
Inclusive Pedagogy Academy
The Inclusive Pedagogy Academy (IPA) is a seven week course designed to introduce and expand faculty knowledge of inclusive teaching practices and develop direct methods through which inclusive teaching can be depolyed in the classroom. The IPA is a collaboration between the Center for Faculty Development and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Advising and First Year Experiences in STEM
Success-centered student support is designed to implement a data-informed proactive approach to orientation, advising, and registration. We are working to ensure that students have the right access, at the right time, with the right academic and personal support to meet their individual needs.
