During this Fall 2024 Semester, English Instructor Matthew Jellick— working with the International College of Beijing (ICB) program in Beijing, China— started a Book Club for students. The group read Gabrielle Zevin’s novel Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow.
Meeting bi-weekly at a local coffeehouse in Beijing, students and faculty discussions revolve around complex character development as well as issues which shape the story, including relationship dynamics, social dichotomies, and economic mobility.
The ICB Book Club offers students an opportunity to address topics which aren’t always talked about in an academic classroom, providing an arena for authentic language development as well as critical thinking skillsets. With a goal to continue into next semester, the bookclub hopes to provide a platform where the readings lead to respectful communication and cultural understanding.
