CU Denver Shines at CHAOSS Data Science Hackathon 2025

On Thursday, June 26th, faculty, staff, and students from CU Denver participated in the CHAOSS Data Science Hackathon 2025, hosted in the Department of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences. This collaborative event brought together curious minds and passionate problem-solvers to explore pressing issues in the open-source ecosystem.

Throughout the day, teams worked intensively on three exciting projects.

Project #1 built new insights on the reasons that lead to the archival of open source projects.

Project #2 explored what happens when vendor-owned open source projects either move to a foundation or change to a non-OSI-approved license.

Project #3 used Data Collection (GraphQL API) and Visualizations (8Knot) to understand the impact of open source project forks specifically those caused by relicensing.

The hackathon was a fantastic opportunity to apply data science in a meaningful way and highlighted the importance of collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking.
