Professor Larry Anderson: Research Impact Beyond Retirement
Although Professor Larry Anderson retired from CU Denver's Department of Chemistry in 2013, he has remained actively engaged in research and scholarly publishing. Most recently, he coauthored a paper stemming from a Fulbright Specialist project initiated in 2016 at the University of Iceland.
Fulbright Project Expands Air Quality Learning and Research
The Fulbright Specialist Program, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State in partnership with host countries, supported Anderson’s work to expand air quality research and education within the University of Iceland’s Environmental Engineering program. The project led to a significant increase in air quality content across both coursework and undergraduate and graduate research activities. It also launched a collaborative effort to better understand and mitigate hydrogen sulfide emissions from geothermal power plants that supply electricity and district heating to the Reykjavik metropolitan area, home to approximately two-thirds of Iceland’s population.
The resulting publication, “Effects of Hydrogen Sulfide Mitigation Efforts on Air Quality Near Geothermal Power Plants in Cold Climate,” was coauthored by Professor Hrund Andradottir of the University of Iceland and Professor Anderson. The paper was published in Atmospheric Environment.
A Longstanding Commitment to Global Learning
Professor Anderson’s involvement with Fulbright programs spans many years. In 2008, he served as a Fulbright Senior Specialist at Taraz State University (TarSU) in Taraz, Kazakhstan, where he helped develop an international graduate program in science and engineering. The project included three visits to Kazakhstan and the hosting of four TarSU students at CU Denver for a month-long study abroad experience. In 2011, Anderson was awarded a Fulbright Scholar appointment at the Joint Graduate School of Energy and Environment (JGSEE) at King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi in Thailand. During that appointment, he led a study abroad course that brought eight CU Denver students to Thailand to explore cutting-edge research and applications in renewable energy, sustainability, and environmental science across Asia.
Professor Anderson’s continued scholarly contributions following retirement exemplify a lifelong commitment to research, international collaboration, and student engagement. His work continues to strengthen global partnerships while advancing solutions to important environmental challenges.
