Dr. K. Mohrman (Associate Teaching Professor, Department of Ethnic Studies) and Mia Fischer (Associate Professor, Department of Communication) publish “‘As-Salaam-Alaikum, Bitches!’: The Biopolitics of Secularism, Neoliberal Multiculturalism, and The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City” in American Quarterly (Volume 77, Number 1: 105-131), the journal of record for American Studies.
In this co-authored article, Drs. Mohrman and Fischer examine the role that secularism plays in rationalizing racial capitalism through the cultural technology of reality television, especially as it masks the ongoing entrenchment of white dominance, resignifying whiteness under multicultural diversity. The article encourages scholars – not just those with an explicit focus on religion – to regard secularism as both a structuring, foundational precursor and contemporary component of neoliberal multiculturalism that should not be ignored.
