Learn More About CU Succeed

At CU Denver, we believe education should work for all—meeting students where they are and opening pathways to success that are both accessible and transformative. The CU Succeed Program embodies this vision by bringing university-level coursework into high schools, allowing students to earn college credit while still in their familiar learning environments. But more than just credits, CU Succeed provides opportunities—helping students and teachers discover their potential, build confidence, and step into their futures with a head start.

For Jami Revielle, an adjunct professor and high school teacher, and Rolando Mijares, a dedicated high school senior, CU Succeed is more than a program—it’s a life-changing experience. Their journey with CU Succeed demonstrates how this initiative bridges gaps in education, making college more accessible, affordable, and meaningful.

From Struggles to Success: A Teacher’s PerspectiveJami and Rolando laughing together

Jami Revielle didn’t take a straight path to higher education. Growing up in Longmont, Colorado, she faced academic challenges that many students can relate to. “I had an academic scholarship, but when I got to college, I had no idea how to study,” Jami recalls. “There were no AP or college-level courses at my high school, so I was completely unprepared.”

After navigating multiple schools and setbacks, she eventually found her way, earning degrees in sociology and political science. But her struggles in higher education left a lasting impression. “I realized I didn’t want students to go through what I went through—to feel lost and unprepared,” she says. That realization led her to teaching, and eventually to CU Succeed.

Jami sees CU Succeed as a game-changer for students, especially those who might otherwise struggle in traditional educational settings. Unlike AP classes, which rely on a single high-stakes exam, CU Succeed evaluates students on their work throughout the year, making college credit more attainable. “It’s not about one test on one day. It’s about the effort students put in every day,” Jami explains. “That’s what makes it so powerful.”

Taking the Initiative: A Student’s Journey

For Rolando Mijares, CU Succeed was worth a 40-minute daily commute. As a student deeply invested in his future, he saw the program as a key to reaching his goals. “Two-year schools near me didn’t offer as many opportunities to earn college credit,” he explains. “So, I made the decision to drive to a school that did.”

His dedication paid off. Through CU Succeed, Rolando has earned around 30 college credits—at a fraction of the cost of traditional university tuition. “I’ve probably spent about $2,000 on CU Succeed classes, which is significantly less than what I would pay in college,” he says. “It’s a huge advantage.”

Beyond affordability, CU Succeed has given Rolando a head start on his career goals. With aspirations to become an aerospace engineer, he understands the importance of rigorous academic preparation. “I’ve always loved math and challenges,” he says. “This program has helped me build the skills I’ll need in college and beyond.”

Rolando’s hard work and strategic planning have already set him apart. He’s currently a semifinalist for the prestigious Boettcher Scholarship, a highly competitive award that could fully fund his college education. “Whether I win or not, CU Succeed has set me up for success,” he says. “I feel prepared for what’s next.”

Breaking Barriers, Creating Opportunities

CU Succeed doesn’t just benefit students—it also empowers educators. Jami highlights how the program offers a more engaging and supportive learning environment compared to traditional AP courses. “I get to teach students who are motivated and excited about their futures,” she says. “They’re not just checking a box for college admissions; they’re actively investing in their education.”

And it’s not just about academics. Jami sees herself as a mentor, helping students navigate the challenges of young adulthood. “I tell my students, ‘If I were your mom, this is what I’d advise you to do,’” she says with a laugh. “It’s about more than just teaching—it’s about guiding them toward success.”
