Student FAQs

How advanced in my studies do I need to be to be an LA?

As long as you are an undergraduate student who has succeed in one of the courses that needs LAs, you are eligible. Graduate students may not be LAs.

Do I have to have earned an “A” in the course I want to be an LA for?

Students with a “B” or higher may be considered. All aspects of the application are taken into account when you apply, so a student with a lower grade may have other outstanding qualities that would complement the LA position.

I’m not available for the LA Weekly Workshop. Can I still be an LA?

If you are new to the LA program, you must attend the Introduction to Teaching and Learning Weekly Workshop (SCED 4050). There are no expectations to this requirement, as the material in the course prepares you to be a successful LA.

How much will I get paid as an LA?

Starting January 1, 2024, LAs are paid $18.29 an hour for 7 - 9 hours per week. New LAs automatically receive a $300 scholarship to help defray a portion of the cost of the mandatory pedagogy weekly workshop that all new LAs are required to take.  Furthermore, we have a scholarship for New LAs for up to an additional $330 per recipient to help you pay for the course if you demonstrate need.

How much does the Intro to Teaching and Learning Weekly Workshop cost?

The Intro to Teaching and Learning Weekly Workshop is a 2-credit course, billed at your specific tuition rate. This requires a separate application and is not guaranteed.

How many hours per week are LAs expected to work?

You should plan to spend approximately 9 - 11 hours per week on your LA duties depending on your LA position. Some weeks may be more, and some weeks may be less, but this is the average.

How will I spend my time as an LA?

As an LA, you are expected to work an estimated 7 - 9 hours per week which includes:

  • attending ALL lectures for your supported course
  • holding help sessions outside of class

  • attending weekly course team meetings

  • completing and responding to other programmatic surveys. You will receive links to these through your CU Denver email account.

  • New LAs - attending LA Weekly Workshop

Are there any additional meetings I need to attend?

All LAs (new and returning) are expected to attend the LA Orientation, which is held each semester the week before the first day of classes. This orientation provides a more detailed overview of the program, and most importantly, will be the first time you will meet with your instructor and the rest of your LA team. You will set your weekly meeting times, office hour schedule, learn more about your instructor's expectations, and have a chance to ask questions.
