Bio

I am an educator, scholar, podcaster, and the 2021 Colorado Teacher of the Year whose work centers equity, culture, storytelling, and student voice. A proud Chicano from Denver and graduate of Denver Public Schools, I spent more than two decades teaching Social Studies at the Denver Center for International Studies at Baker,I later served in leadership roles with Denver Public Schools and CareerWise Colorado, supporting aspiring educators and teacher apprenticeship pathways across Colorado. Gerardo is host and executive producer of the podcast Too Dope Teachers and a Mic, which explores race, power, education, and culture through conversations with educators, artists, and activists. His writing and commentary have appeared in educational publications and edited collections focused on justice-centered teaching and ethnic studies. He is currently pursuing a PhD at the University of Denver Morgridge College of Education, researching the retention of educators of color and the systems that support or constrain their work. Outside of education, Gerardo is active in community organizing, mentorship, and creative projects that amplify marginalized voices.
