The mission of the Department of Modern Languages is to create a learning environment in which students develop the linguistic skills and cultural knowledge necessary to participate in the global arena as informed, productive and compassionate world citizens.
The DML will provide academic training to Master's students in Spanish; majors and minors in French and Spanish; minors and Certificate students in German; and students of Chinese language through the second year, as well as basic language training to students in the UC Denver undergraduate schools and colleges in fulfillment of the foreign language requirements.
The DML will further:
- promote the internationalization of the university curriculum in association with the Office of International Education through study abroad programs, both department-led and those offered by other institutions of higher learning
- remain current with technological innovations in teaching so that students develop linguistic sophistication and literacy skills in the target language and are able to conduct research in that language
- seek external funding for language-based curriculum development
- foster a supportive environment for scholarship among DML faculty and students
