Received his Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Colorado Boulder in 1965. Was a member of the CU Boulder faculty from 1967 until 1979 when he moved to the CU Denver campus to join the physics department. He was the founder and director of the Center for Environmental Sciences, and the director of the MSES program from 1987 to 2002.
