Electron-mercury collisions undergraduate research assistant

Job Description: The Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics Theory group seeks an undergraduate student to support a new project seeking to calculate angle-differential cross sections for electron-impact excitation of neutral mercury. The student will use the B-Spline atomic R-Matrix code and related software to perform the quantum mechanics calculations required to determine the necessary cross sections. These calculations will be performed on a variety of US-based supercomputers. This position is part-time, with a minimum of 5 hours per week and a maximum of 20 hours per week.

 

 

Job Class: Student Assistant Level # III

 

Pay Range: $19.50

 

Start Date: June 9th 2025, or upon completion of new hire forms/background check/and I-9

End Date: August 8th, 2025

Minimum Requirements:

Successful completion of General Physics I and II with a grade of C- or higher.

Strong written communication skills

Familiarity with LINUX operating systems

Familiarity with the Python programming language

 

Preferred Requirements

Desire to develop skills in High Performance Computing

Broad interest in Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics
