Expertise Areas: 

Art History and Classical Studies, specializing in the visual and material culture of the Ancient Greco-Roman world. Research focuses on women and gender in the Classical world.

  •  Margaret Woodhull holds a Ph.D. and M.A. in Art History and Classical Studies from the University of Texas at Austin, and a B.A. in Art History from Georgetown University. Her training also includes study at the American School of Classical Studies in Athens, Greece, and at the Charles A. Strong Center, Villa le Balze, in Fiesole (Florence), Italy.

  • Margaret Woodhull is an Associate Professor in the History Department at the University of Colorado Denver. She is an Art Historian specializing in the visual and material culture of the Ancient Greco-Roman world, with a research focus on women in the Classical world. Since 2005, she has directed the Master of Humanities and Social Science and Interdisciplinary Studies programs at CU Denver.

    Her book, Monumental Matrons: Imperial Women, Gender, and Architecture in Rome from the Early to Mid-Empire, will be published by Cambridge University Press in early 2027. It explores questions of female agency, political authority, and the role of the imperial woman in ancient Rome through the monumental public buildings they built or received honorifically.

  • She's been the recipient of numerous grants, including a Fulbright Fellowship (Rome), Samuel H Kress Fellow,  Archaeological Institute of America's Woodruff Traveling Fellowship, a Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship in Women's Studies (now the Institute for Citizens and Scholars), Haakon Teaching Fellowship (SMU, Dallas), and CU Denver Dean's Excellence Awards.
