Rep. Adrienne Benavidez represents House District 32, which includes Commerce City and parts of unincorporated Adams County. Rep. Benavidez serves on the House Judiciary; Finance; and State, Veterans & Military Affairs Committees as well as the legislative oversight Committee concerning the Treatment oPersons with Mental Health Disorders in the Criminal Justice System.
Rep. Benavidez sponsored several bills to fight for Colorado workers, including a bill to ensure CDOT public-private initiatives pay their construction workers a fair wage, and a bill to require public project contractors to use apprentices where possible to help open up high-quality job opportunities and develop skilled workers. Rep. Benavidez has also sponsored important legislation on criminal justice reform and mental health.
Rep. Benavidez is an attorney and management professional. She is a former executive director of the City of Denver’s Department of General Services, which handles city purchasing and manages 128 city buildings. Previously, she directed the state Division of Finance and Procurement under Gov. Bill Ritter.
Rep. Benavidez has served on the board of directors or as a volunteer with more than a dozen community-based organizations including the Colorado Latino Forum, Progress Now, Padres Unidos, the Colorado Lawyers Committee, the ACLU of Colorado, the KUVO radio station, Harrison Memorial Animal Hospital and the Legal Center for People with Disabilities and Older People.
She also previously served as a steward for two federal government unions, the American Federation of Government Employees and the National Treasury Employees Union.
Rep. Benavidez has been chairwoman of the Rules Committee of the Colorado Democratic Party and has been an Adams County Democratic precinct committeewoman. She has volunteered with the party’s Legal Protection Team, which monitors elections to ensure no voters are disenfranchised, since its inception in 2006.
Rep. Benavidez has a juris doctorate and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Colorado.
