Payment of Employee Tuition or Fees

Tuition Assistance Benefit

1) The employee Tuition Assistance Benefit (TAB) is the primary governing policy for the University covering an employee's cost of courses attended at the University. The TAB only pays for tuition expenses (not fees) and is subject to various limitations: (see the TAB Policy link) TAB Policy

a. Up to 9 credits per academic year (Fall, Spring, Summer), based on FTE

b. Work in a regular, non-temporary position

c. Work a minimum of 20 hours or more per week (50% or greater appointment)

d. Be in an eligible job code (see the Benefits Eligibility Matrix link) Benefits Eligibility Matrix

e. Some courses / programs are ineligible (see the TAB Policy link above)

f. Tuition assistance may be subject to taxation and may affect financial aid (see the Benefit Taxability link) Benefit Taxability

Scholarships

2) Employees may receive scholarship monies to cover the cost of coursework (including fees) beyond the TAB subject to these limitations:

a. The scholarship must be application-based

b. The selection process must be equitable

c. To ensure equity the potential pool of eligible applicants must be sufficiently large

3) Students enrolled in graduate programs who also hold Teaching or Research Assistant positions may receive scholarship monies but are not eligible to receive the TAB per the Benefits Eligibility Matrix.

University funds may NOT be used to pay for any amount of tuition and fees for an employee (holding any position) beyond what is stated above.

To ensure compliance it is recommended that CLAS departments reach out to the CLAS Dean's Office Finance Team prior to creating a scholarship award.
