Learning Outcomes

At the completion of a certificate in African American Studies students will be able to:

  • Explain theories and histories of marginalization and discrimination (especially colonialism; slavery; resistance) and the implications of structural bias on contemporary events.
  • Identify diverse social positions and analyze how social position affects access.
  • Recognize their own experiences and identities in the context of the rich cultural diversity of our nation and know how these experiences impact their personal and professional interactions.
  • Summarize major contributions and impact of people of African descent in US institutions and society.
  • Understand the central role of African Americans in critiquing, sustaining and expanding democracy in our nation.
