Course Equivalencies - Comp Program

For English 1020 and 2030

Some students may be in a position to request credit for English 1020 and/or 2030 because of previous testing or courses taken. Course equivalencies are considered by meeting with an English Advisor: contact the English Department at 303-315-7830 to make an advising appointment. Before making an appointment, please read all the information below.

Equivalencies for English 1020 may be achieved in the following four ways

1. AP credit. The student must receive a 4 or a 5 on either the AP Language/Composition or AP Composition/Literature Exam. If the student receives a 3, the student must also receive an A in the second semester of the high school AP course to receive credit for 1020. Your college advisor can talk to you about transferring AP credit (there is no need to meet with an English Advisor), and here is information from the course catalog.

2. CLEP credit. The student must score in the 50th percentile on the College Composition exam (not College Composition Modular). Your college advisor can talk to you about taking the CLEP test and getting proper credit (there is no need to meet with an English Advisor). For information on the CLEP examination, click on this link.

3. IB exam. The student must score a minimum of 4 on either the standard or higher exam to receive credit for 1020. Your college advisor can talk to you about transferring IB credit (there is no need to meet with an English advisor).

4. An equivalent course taken at another university. See below.

Courses Taken at Other Colleges and Universities

A course taken at a regionally-accredited institution of higher education may be accepted as an equivalent course to 1020 and/or 2030 if the course has similar course goals and the student performed well. Certain courses are guaranteed as “automatic transfers” for English 1020 and 2030. See the gtPathways website for automatic equivalents for 1020 (“GT-CO1”) and 2030 (“GT-CO2”). You can meet with your college advisor regarding these courses (if they did not automatically transfer). There is no need to meet with an English Advisor to transfer these courses.

If there is no transfer agreement between the school where the course was taken and UCD, you will need to meet with an English Advisor to see if you can receive credit for the course you took elsewhere. Contact the English Department at 303-315-7830 to make an appointment.

Bring the following documents to the course equivalency meeting:

1. A description of the course to be considered, taken from the college or university catalog.

2. An unofficial or official transcript indicating the grade received in the course at the previous institution.

3. Your current UCD transcript (unofficial is fine).

4. The syllabus for the course, if possible.

5. Papers written in the course, if possible.

The decision to grant credit is at the discretion of the English Advisors.
