The Writing Process Part 1:
Preparation and Pre-Writing

This workshop is designed for students who need practice in writing effective essays for UCD courses. Participants will learn how to compose a research proposal/prospectus, draft an effective thesis statement, and develop content in paragraphs. The workshop will also cover a variety of important academic issues such as active vs. passive voice, avoiding wordiness, and plagiarism.

Writing a Curriculum Vitae (C.V.)

Presenter: Justin Bain, Writing Center Director

This workshop is designed for both graduate students who are considering a career in higher education and instructors/faculty who are interested in revising their CVs. The workshop will provide an overview of creating a Curriculum Vitae: a specialized academic resume. We will discuss who needs a C.V. and why, what goes in a C.V., and examine a variety of professional samples. Time will also be allotted to look at drafts of your own C.V.

Writing a Literature Review

In this workshop, participants will be shown the basics of crafting an
effective literature review. The workshop will cover methods of
approaching research, analyzing information, grouping sources, finding
common themes and contentions, and expressing the findings in a clear
and direct way.

Timed Writing Prep

Presenter: Justin Bain and Drew Bixby

This workshop is designed for both undergrads and grads who are preparing to take timed writing exams. This workshop will cover both in-class times writing exams and formal timed writing exams such as the GRE and LSAT. Students will learn and practice strategies for effectively reading and responding to timed writing prompts. Time will also be devoted to discussing time management and electronic scoring systems.

Personal Statements & Letters of Intent

Presenter: Caitrin de la Garza

The workshop will define the subtle differences between personal statements, directed application essays, and letters of intent. It will also discuss what should and should not be included in each, common mistakes, and addressing academic transgressions. The workshop will culminate with a few directed writing and brainstorming exercises in order to get students thinking of ways to begin the essay and topics they can cover.

Writing Effective Grant Proposals I

Presenters: Terry Zambon and Justin Bain

This workshop will describe key features of designing, writing, and submitting an effective grant proposal. Specific sections of grants and strategies for writing grants will be discussed. The workshop is open to graduate students and faculty. A second workshop will provide you with an opportunity to bring in your own drafts of grants and receive focused feedback in a workshop environment.

Fundamentals of Film Analysis

Presenter: Benjamin Syn

In this two-hour workshop, we will go over how to compose a film analysis. We will define the genre of film writing and discuss the essential concepts of the cinema (including mise-en-scène, cinematography, editing, and sound), which we will explore through a short film. We will then screen a second film and workshop how to analyze a filmic text. After this, we will have some time to address specific questions on your assignments from courses like Telling Tales, Introduction to Film, and any other course that has a film element.
