Shelby publishing and presenting her work
Candice Shelby, associate professor of philosophy, published the article "Addiction: Beyond Disease and Choice," in the Fall 2013 issue of Philosophy in the Contemporary World (20:2). In this paper she argues that currently available models for understanding addiction fail to recognize the complex and dynamic nature of the phenomenon, with the result that treatment approaches are fragmented and generally unsuccessful. Appreciation of these characteristics results in changing imperatives for research into and treatment of addiction.
Shelby, has also been awarded a dissemination grant to present her work on biological coding at the social level, at the Code Biology 2014 conference, to be held in May at Universite de Paris Descartes, in Paris, France.
