Mandel and Cobb studying spread of wildfires in the wake of a fire-heavy summer

Jan Mandel (left), professor and chair of the mathematical and statistical sciences department, is PI and Loren Cobb (right), research associate professor, is co-PI on this National Science Foundation-funded research project that is using real-time data to more quickly predict the movement of wildfires. This type of data assimilation for tracking wildfires will offer many benefits, including helping to ensure that people are cleared from harm's way, guiding firefighters to more quickly contain and extinguish wildfires and improved forest and prairie management.
