Keranen named president of the Association for the Rhetoric of Science and Technology
Lisa Keränen, associate professor of communication, was named President of the Association for the Rhetoric of Science and Technology (ARST) at the annual meeting of ARST in Orlando, Florida, which was held in conjunction with the annual meeting of the National Communication Association (NCA), November 14-18, 2012. ARST provides a scholarly forum for researchers and teachers interested in the persuasive dimensions of scientific and technical language. Keranen organized a day-long preconference, "Inventing the Future," in honor of the ARST's twentieth anniversary. Picking up on the term invention, the art of discovering arguments, the preconference convened three generations of scholars working in the rhetoric of science--from leading scholars and founders of the subfield through graduate students--to reflect on past, present, and future trajectories of scholarship investigating the rhetorical dimensions of science, technology, and medicine. Keranen will be editing a forthcoming 2013 special issue of POROI: A Journal of Rhetorical Analysis and Invention that extends the preconference theme.
