She has also been successfully teaching in and providing service to her department, and is a former Olympian and member of the US National Rifle Team.

She co-authored (with Sonja Foss and Karen Foss) a textbook, Gender Stories, which came out this year. In addition, Mary has proved herself an effective teacher and has provided service to CLAS as a member of the Student Advisory Council.
