Burciaga awarded grant

Assistant Professor of Sociology Edelina Burciaga (along with faculty colleagues from Brown University, California State University-Dominguez Hills and Harvard University) has been awarded a grant from the American Sociological Association’s Fund for the Advancement of the Discipline. The award is “intended to provide opportunities for substantive and methodological breakthroughs, broaden the dissemination of scientific knowledge, and provide leverage for acquisition of additional research funds.” Building on extent work on how illegality affects young immigrants’ social and political incorporation, Burciaga’s team will examine how local enactments of law have differential effects on migrant illegality as a lived experience for youth. By doing so, they will extend the study of migration and draw attention to the intersection of the life course, law, and local context. This work will span multiple geographic contexts including the West, Mid-West, South, and Northeastern United States situated within the context of limited rights for immigrants at the federal level.
