Learning Assistants Present Posters

On May 9th, the Math and Science Learning and Education Consortium (MSLE) hosted a Learning Assistants (LA) Poster Session for LAs in Biology I and II, Genetics, General Chemistry I, Organic Chemistry I and II, Introduction to Physical Geography, and Introduction to Environmental Science. The students presented projects from the LA pedagogy course (Introduction to Science Teaching and Learning) addressing topics ranging from the effectiveness of innovative teaching methods (such as "flipped" classrooms) to student use of resources (e.g., textbooks, LAs, TAs, etc.) and relationship to student performance.  Biology Senior Kimberly Moyer (pictured left, with collaborator Luke Schilling, right) says, “My experience as a learning assistant was very valuable and I am so glad I had the opportunity to work in the Genetics course and with Dr. (Amy) Bernard. During the semester I had the chance to try many new things and I learned a lot about education and teaching… Overall the learning assistant program provided me with many important tools, and I think what I learned will help me as I move onto graduate school and into a job.”
