The Future of Whiteness
Terrace Room, Lawrence Street Center
The Honi Haber Memorial Lecture by Linda Alcoff, sponsored by the CU Denver Philosophy Department
Professor Linda Martín Alcoff is President of the American Philosophical Association, Eastern Division, and teaches philosophy at the City University of New York, both at Hunter College and the Graduate Center. She received her Ph.D. from Brown University in 1987, and has written and edited several books, including Visible Identities: Race, Gender and the Self (Oxford University Press, 2006). This talk is an opportunity to think aloud about the present day character and experience of whiteness as a lived, embodied identity in the context of the contemporary United States. The lived experience of whiteness must be understood in its relation to whiteness as an imaginary, or collective unconscious, that affects, and infects, the subject-formation of those designated as white people, as well as of those who are aspiring to be white.
